After the parties leave the Comanche Station they cross a wide, shallow expanse of water and in the middle of the water, centered in the frame is a dead tree trunk that looks suspiciously like the hanging tree from Ride Lonesome (1959). The saved damsel Nancy Lowe gets the wrong impression about Cody believing the gruff figure was only in it for the money and that is far from the truth, as he intends to take her back to her husband out of harms way. It doesn’t come out until much later but it turns out that Jefferson Cody’s (Randolph Scott) own wife was captured by Comanche well nigh 10 years ago and he has never stopped looking. We don’t quite know why at first, but through haggling and bartering he’s able to save a captured white woman. It’s quite an ending.Comanche Station opens with a man who willfully goes into Comanche territory. The one unique thing about this film is the last scene. Why not do something new? That’s the question I would ask Budd and Burt if they were sitting here. It’s not that I don’t like Comanche Station it’s a solid western but I question the worth of repeating what worked, and often times worked better, in other movies. The sequence even ends the same way, with a punch in the face from Randolph Scott. The most embarrassing theft might be the scene where Claude Akins tells a story that reflects the exact situation they’re in, just as Lee Marvin did (and did better) in Seven Men From Now. A gang of outlaws want to take the reward away from him. However, I believe the latter variations of their formula provide diminishing returns.Ĭomanche Station steals blatantly from the previous films: another dead wife backstory, an abandoned outpost, the bounty hunter buddies, and competition between two men over a bounty.
